The Color of Faith
A three part series presented by PLC member Derrick Agate in which Derrick will delve into the Black experience in America by sharing personal stories. Derrick is an immigrant from Jamaica and with his family have been members of Prairie Lutheran Church for over 30 years. He served as council president during the building expansion and capital campaign during the early 2000’s. Derrick has been active in the community in volunteer positions, both civic and athletic. Derrick and his wife Kim have four children and one grandchild who live in the metro area.
Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10, 2021 at 6:30pm.
1. Praying while Black - Jan 27, Derrick will share his experience of being a Black member in a mostly white congregation. He will reflect on what it is like when he worships, attends Men’s Groups, leads Confirmation Small Groups, sings in the choir, and more.
2. Working while Black – February 3, Derrick has a diverse career in business and the public sector. Derrick will share what it is like on the factory floor, the boardroom, the sales call, and the commute to and from work as a Black man.
3. Parenting while Black - February 10, Derrick and his wife Kim have raised four amazing children in a mostly white suburb. The Agate family have thrived in sometimes daunting circumstances. Derrick will reflect on aspects of implicit bias that his family encountered in daily life.
