Christian – Muslim Dialogue
1.30.20
Over the past decade Eden Prairie has seen a significant increase in its Somali population. Our new neighbors come with different traditions, habits and religion, among other things. A couple of years ago Pastor Joel Quie and Abdulhamid Sheek met and developed a friendship. They have met regularly at area coffee shops and discussed all manner of topics, especially theology. Abdi teaches at the EP Islamic Center and Joel is a pastor of Prairie Lutheran Church. Many Friday mornings, Joel will bring his Quran and Abdi his Bible and they ask questions about each other’s faith and practices. The idea formed among them about hosting a dialogue where the wider community could enter into their conversation.
All are welcome to attend and listen and learn more about the Christian and Islamic faiths and also how this can be done in a friendly and respectful manner. It will be a dialogue and not a debate. Both Joel and Abdi respect each other and cherish their friendship. Although they have different beliefs they appreciate the wisdom of each other’s faith.
The event will be held at PLC on three Fridays in March 2020, the 13th , 20th & 27th from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the DEC meeting space.
The format will feature Abdulhamid and Joel discussing various religious topics including God & Allah, the Bible & the Quran as well as Jesus & Mohammed. They will respond to each other’s presentation and give time for the audience to offer questions and comments. Tea and coffee will be served.
