Our Legacy

Prairie Lutheran Church has a rich legacy as a community of faith founded in the city of Eden Prairie, MN. From its first meetings at ‘The Barn’ Community Center off Anderson Lakes Parkway to our current location, God has blessed this congregation with gifts of
grace. Below is a short recap of highlights from the preceding years. As you can see, when you mix Jesus’ call and our response, great things happen. Praise to God for his people on the Prairie and beyond!

1977 - Rev. John Sippola commissioned by LCMS to start mission congregation in Eden Prairie - October.
1977 - First service in ‘The Barn’ on Anderson Lakes Pkwy - December
1980 - PLC is transferred from LCMS to the ELCA
1980 - Rev. Henry Lieske becomes interim pastor, March.
1981 - Rev. Omar Stuenkel installed, January.
1985 - Rev. Merrill Ronning installed as Lead Pastor, March.
1987 - Ground breaking for new church on 11000 Blossom Road, April.
1987 - Dedication and worship at new Church, October.

1995 – Rev. Merrill Ronning resigns and Rev. Pete Raquette serves as interim
1996 - Rev. Joel Quie Installed as Lead Pastor, August.
1997 - The 5 Holy Habits (Worship, Learning, Giving, Serving, Prayer) are adopted as guiding principles.
1998 - 1st annual MNATC choir sings at worship, January.
2000 - 1st Capital Campaign, ‘Building Disciples' kicked off
2001 - Ground breaking for church expansion, May.
2002 - 1st service held in church expansion, March 9 - The Purpose Driven Church program
2004 - 2nd Capital Campaign, ‘Celebrate & Participate’ kicked off
2005 - 1st annual ‘Our Neighbor’s Faith’ tour
2006 - ‘Prairie Dorm’ in South India dedicated - Pastor Deb Bergstrand installed as Associate Pastor
2007 - 1st family mission trip to Doulos Discovery School in Dominican Republic.
2008 - 3rd Capital Campaign, ‘Rooted in Faith - Growing in Service‘ kicked off
2009 - 1st annual ‘Art of Faith’
2010 - Pastoral Intern program begun, Scott Dalen
2011 - 4th Capital Campaign, ‘Generation to Generation' kicked off
2012 – ‘The Story” annual worship theme with huge scrolls attached on sides of altar.
2013 - PLC publishes its first book, “ACTS: A Call To Serve” Bible study and worship resource.
2014 - 5th Capital Campaign, ‘Freedom from Debt' kicked off 
          - PLC publishes its second book, “The Promise” Bible study and worship resource.
2015 - PLC publishes its third book, “The Prayer Journal” Bible study and worship resource.
2016 -
2017 - Mortgage burned, PLC becomes debt free! October.
2018 – Talent Challenge receives over $30,000 and gives away to iPoint and LPGM 
          - ‘Sympathy Scroll’ created for Tree of Life Synagogue in Pgh. April.
2019 - “People of Promise” web based Bible study and worship resource goes live online, September.
2019 - Rev. Bryant Bakkum called as Associate Pastor, August.
2020 - March 15, Covid-19 Pandemic, church building closed, worship is recorded.
2020 - May 23, in-person worship service resumes PLC parking lot. Worship moves indoors on September 6 and continues safely        
          throughout the pandemic.
2020 - At Annual Meeting in October, the Congregation votes unanimously to endorse ‘Justice in Motion’  
          and study ELCA documents on racism.
2021 - Rev. Joel Quie retires, June 30
