Talent Challenge

The results are in! You took the Talent Challenge and your faithfulness deserves the response from scripture, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” On Sunday, November 11, 2018 Prairie Lutheran Church had a Talent Challenge celebration. Five weeks earlier on Sunday, October 7, thousands of dollars were given away after worship and the learning hour. For just over a month this fall, hundreds of people used their talents to increase the dollars they received. On Sunday, November 11, members returned their original talents plus the dollars they maximized. The result of our efforts netted an additional $10,275! And every day, more envelopes are still coming in the mail. Thanks be to God!

In the sermon that Sunday, Pastor Joel talked about the second happiest people in the world. They are people who are Grateful. The happiest people in the world are people who are Generous. Gratitude and Generosity. Those are two keys to the Kingdom of God that Jesus preached and taught about. Everything He did and said related back to these two attitudes. The Talent Challenge was our way to experience the truth of His words.

What next? All the dollars are going to continue to spread the Good News of the Generosity and Gratitude of Prairie Lutheran Church. Both the original dollars/talents that were distributed/returned and the new dollars that were added are going to be sent to two partner ministries of PLC. Half will go to iPoint Camp in Alexandria and the other half will go to LPGM ministries in India. Both ministries will use these new funds to support new children focused initiatives.

Pastor Joel also spoke in his sermon about the God-timing of our Talent Challenge. When he reached out to the executive directors of both ministries, Greg Anderson and Dan Ruth, they each said the timing was an answer to prayer. Both had just discussed new initiatives with their boards and all they needed was money to support their endeavors. The talent dollars we send to them are answers to their prayers! God is good. All the time!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Talent Challenge. Your faithful response was biblical. Our lives are a gift from God filled with talents. Jesus calls us to invest those talents in lives of Gratitude and Generosity. Thanks be to God for giving us more than we need and enough to share our blessings with others.

An unbelievable thing happened at Prairie Lutheran Church this fall. On Sunday, October 7, 2018 - $20,000 was given away during worship and Sunday school. That’s right, 20K! This amazing act of generosity was inspired by Jesus’ Parable of the Talents, Mathew
25:14 – 27.

On that Sunday morning hundreds of envelopes stuffed with either a $5, $10, $20, $50 or $100 bills were handed out to those in attendance. The reason was to invite people to maximize this free gift and experience the challenge of the parable. Namely, everything we receive in life is a gift from God. Our daily challenge is what are we doing with all the talents we have. What we have in our hearts and hands, our careers and callings, our check books and bank accounts – they represent assets that can be maximized, or hidden.

This fall we are having fun creating ways to build on our blessings. Everyone is invited to create and expand what was received and then return it on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Everything will then be given away to invest in more talents. Two PLC partner ministries that focus on kids will receive all of our dollars. Read below for more details about how, when and where we will be showing that Prairies’s got talent! Thanks be to God!

1. Thank you for taking the Talent Challenge!
2. You have 5 weeks to maximize the money in your envelope.
3. Come up with a plan for how you’ll multiply your money. Read the reverse side of this paper for ideas.
4. Where will the money go? We are investing in kids! Read about our two PLC partners ministries who will receive the funds that are collected.
5. Write down what you did to multiply your money. Enclose that response form with your money in the enclosed envelope.
6. Bring your envelope to worship on Sunday, November 11, for our Prairie’s Got Talent celebration at both the 9:00 and 11:00 worship services.
7. Create a short video (just do one on your phone!) and post to social media using the tag #plctalentchallenge or email to Scott at scott@plcchurch.org showing us what you’re doing. Over the next month we want to share ideas and see what we’re all up to! We’ll put some of these on our website and at worship.
8. Begin this adventure in prayer. The gifts we receive from God include skills, abilities, family and social connections, educational experiences, and more. The point of the parable is that we are called to be stewards and managers and use whatever we’ve been given for God’s purposes.

Create or make a product you can share with friends, neighbors, co-workers and others; create jewelry, bake cookies, cakes or desserts, make flower arrangements for birthdays or special occasions, make homemade cards, develop your favorite spice blend, design and sew something, build something made of metal or wood or clay. Then sell your creations to friends and neighbors, on your Facebook page, in your office, or in your neighborhood.
Host an Event...
Host a fun event where people connect and build relationships. Use your Parable of the Talents money to plan an event and invite people to buy a ticket or make a donation. It could be a tea or dinner party OR host a movie night or game night and invite friends. Offer special treats and let your guests know how excited you are to support this campaign as you ask them to make a personal donation.
Use your skills for a great opportunity to fill someone else’s need while growing God’s investment in you. Offer house cleaning, raking leaves, landscaping, babysitting, home repair, room painting, planting flowers or some other service people need. Tell people about your cause and ask them to donate in return.
Be Part of Thrivent Action Team!
If you’re a Thrivent member, you can get $250 more to help your cause! It’s simple! Just go to Thrivent.com. Search “Action Team.” Enter your plan for multiplying your talents. When approved, you'll receive $250 to use for your plan.

Stay tune for results. Every Sunday in October members will be sharing their ideas and activities as they maximize their talents!
